What is Oculoplastics?

Oculoplastics is the short name for Ocular and Facial Plastic Surgery.

What is their scope of practice?

Oculoplastic surgeons specialize in aesthetic surgery of the face and neck, with special emphasis on the delicate area around your eyes.

This includes the latest techniques in eyelid lifts, brow lift, and face lifts. They also perform a variety of non-invasive treatments including botulinum toxin (Botox), Fillers, Lasers and other energy- based devices.

Oculoplastic specialists are also experts in the treatment of diseases of the lacrimal system, orbital tumors and eyelid reconstruction.

What makes Oculoplastics special?

Oculoplastics is the field of medicine that combines the micro-surgery skills of Ophthalmology, with the aesthetic concepts of Plastic surgery. Oculoplastic surgeons typically complete specialty training in Ophthalmology, followed by a sub-specialized training in facial plastic surgery.

Qualifications

After medical school, an oculoplastic surgeon spends years of residency training in Ophthalmology focusing on micro-surgery in the intricate anatomy of the eye. This is followed by sub-specialized training in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, where oculoplastic surgeons focus on the latest cosmetic and functional treatment modalities of the eyelid and face.

    e.g. Expert use of Micro needling and Platelet-rich plasma for scars and facial rejuvenation
    e.g. Broad experience in Laser resurfacing using CO2 Lumenis laser, and other energy bases devices

Functional Eyelid

  • Blepharoptosis repair

  • Eyelid reconstruction (following congenital defects, trauma, or tumor excision)

  • Eyelid retraction repair

  • Ectropion and entropion repair

  • Repair of trichiasis (e.g., cryoablation, lid split and excision, and mucous membrane graft)

  • Conjunctivoplasty

Functional Orbit

  • Orbitotomy for exploration, biopsy, and tumor removal using anterior, lateral, medial, and superior approaches, and orbital reconstruction
    e.g. orbital decompression of deep sphenoid bone for graves’ disease or fibrous dysplasia, orbital reposition with auto or allogenic grafts or prosthesis
  • Excision of benign and malignant tumors involving the periorbital and adjacent regions
  • Enucleation, evisceration, exenteration, secondary implants of the orbit

Facial Reconstruction

  • Fracture repair of bones involving the periorbital region orbit
    e.g. Orbit, naso-ethmoid, zygomatic complex fractures
  • Trauma and laceration repairs
  • Tissue transfer, grafts, and flaps
    e.g. Mustarde, Tenzel, paramedian and temporal flaps
    e.g. Dermis fat, free fat, ear cartilage, septal cartilage, hard palate, skin, bone, fascia lata grafts
    e.g. Adjacent tissue transfer, SOOF lift, island or pedicle flap, myocutaneous flaps

Lacrimal

  • Endoscopic and external Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) and other lacrimal procedures
  • Nasal endoscopy as related to the management of lacrimal and periorbital processes
  • Sinus surgery and endoscopy as related to periorbital and lacrimal processes (e.g. Orbital decompression surgery)
